The Beaches of Mallorca
Platja de Coll Baix, Alcudia A stunning, remote and completely unspoilt pebbly beach surrounded by a natural amphitheatre of rocks. Pack your own pinic because there are no restaurants within easy reach. There have been several UFO sightings at Coll Baix and ET believers say there's an underwater base just off the coast.
Torrent de Pareis, Escorca On calm days this is a spectacular beach - a strip of pebbly sand protected by two vast walls of rock. On stormy days the beach is inundated by the sea crashing through the gorge. Take the winding, 14-kilometre road down to Port de sa Calobra, then walk through the foot-tunnel to reach the area.
Es Trenc, Campos Es Trenc's three and a half kilometres of sandy beach and surrounding woodlands are one of the best-preserved areas of Mallorca - mainly thanks to a long struggle on the part of ecological groups to have it protected by law. Its fine white sand can get busy at weekends, especially near to the carpark. The ends of the beach, however, are usually deserted.
Platja de Formentor/Cala Pi de la Posada, Pollenca A kilometre of paradise-like sandy beach fringed with virgin pinewoods. Around the hotel is a hunting ground for celebrity spotters, but the rest of the area is quiet and wonderfully un-commercialised. Can be reached either by road, along the Formentor peninsula, or by ferry which runs every hour - from Port de Pollenca.
Cala Torta, Arta The grandest of the several undeveloped beaches in the area, a wide arc of sand surrounded by dunes and a dry landscape. To get there take the turning towards Capdepera at the petrol station outside Arta. Nine kilometres later, take a right. The private road becomes a rough track and the beach is 1.5km further on. There is often a build-up of seaweed on the sand but lovers of unspoilt beaches will take that in their stride.
Es Trenc The largest beach area on the coast and well worth a visit as despite the impact of tourism on the island the area is largely undeveloped and remains peaceful.
Cala Pi Part of a much larger area of clean shoreline, Cala Pi is small but especially pleasant.
Cala Agulla A splendid beach located bit further to the north. It can suffer from the effects of strong winds at certain time of the year.
Cala Mesquida Its choppy water limits Cala Mesquida's suitability for swimming, but the beach near Cala Agulla is beautiful.
Cala Torta Located along the northern part of the eastern coastline Cala Torta is exposed to the effects of weather. |
