Castello di Montegufoni "Apartment Il Guardiano"
The history...
Montegufoni is located on the old road Volterrana, which was used of Carl Magno and other empereors in order to catch up to Florence or Rome. Originally the castle belonged to the Ormanni, a family of which Dante spoke in ist Divine Commedia. In the 1135 fiorentini they sent a punitive shipment in order to destroy the castle, so that it was left in a heap of ruins until the year 1200, when the property wa owned by the Acciaicoli. Gugliareello was the first owner. Its descendants earned through the use of the new banking system an enormous wealth and towards the end of XIII century the Monteguofi had become a castle with a series of 7 constructions encirceld of a wall. The 7 ancient villas of the ancestral castle of Montegufoni were registered as one castle. In 1310, Nicholas Acciaioli – the subsequent Great Siniscalco of Naples and beloved friend of the Boccaccio and the Petrarch – who was born here in the castle. In 1348 when King Luigi of Naples was removed from his reign from the King of Hungary, he was sheltered by the first minister of Monteguofi and by the Bishop Acciaioli. In 1386 the tower and other rooms were constructed by Donated Acciailoli. 1396 Donated threatened to reform Florence and the castle was hunted and defeated by the Republics, but its assets (including Montegufoni) were saves from the seizure of his brother Cardinal. The three sons of Donated did reside at the court of Antene until on e of them, Agnolo di Jacopo returned to Montegufoni with the son (Duca Francisco) and its cousins. From there he had probably taken the name of “ Courtyard of the Duchi “. Montegufoni was the centre of meetingas of fiorentini artists. In 1612 also Cosimo de`Doctors was host of the castle.Until 1650 Donating and Anna Altoviti Maria restructed the castle completely to the way we see it today, joining the 7 sepaerate structures. The castle continued to of being the social centre of the florentina life for the XVII and XVIII century, until the decline of the Acciaioli family who sold it and erects shacks. Then in 1909, Sir George Sitwell fell in love with magnificient structure of Montegufoni and decided to acquire it for his son Sir Osbert Sitwell. From then the Sitwells began to enrich and embellish the castle. Like the room with the frescoes from Gino Severini in 1922. With the Sitwells Montegufoni did find again the past splendor and the castle became a centre of english writers and especially american artists. In 1966 Sir Osbert moved ino the castle where he died in 1969. In 1972, resbery Sitwell sold the castle to Sergio Posarelli, and from then it became important all over the world, to be the social centre of the florentina life.
